North Eastern Veteran Football Association - 10th Challenge Cup Veteran Football


North Eastern Veteran Football Association became the second team to book a semi-final berth in the 10th Challenge Cup Veteran Football Tournament at Mapal Kangjeibung today.

In another quarter-final encounter, United Veteran Sporting Association defeated Southern United Veteran Football Association through sudden death, becoming the third team to enter the final four.

In their quarter-final match, North Eastern Veteran Football Association overpowered All Thangmeiband Veteran Football Association by a solitary goal for a place in the semi-final after Football Lovers Association of Manipur.

The Thangmeiband Veteran men looked worn out and their attack lacked the required sting and direction, especially their forwards today. The North Eastern Veteran Football Association played more organised football and it was not until the 25th minute that their steady runs paid off.

Seizing on a right flank run, M. Boichou Singh passed the ball to T. Minthang Vaihei, who took his time and executed a perfectly lofted shot overshooting the goalkeeper for the lone goal of the match in the first half today.

The second half could not produce any further goals, giving the North Eastern team the deserving win. The goal scorer, T. Minthang Vaiphei, was declared the Man of the Match.

All Thangmeiband Veteran Football Association player P. Joykumar Singh was booked with a yellow card for kicking the ball after the referee’s whistle while Gainailung Kabui of the North Eastern team for unnecessarily wasting time.

In the match between United Veteran Sporting Association and Southern United Veteran, both teams could not produce any goals during the 60 minutes of play. The outcome was decided by tiebreakers.

Both teams were allowed 11 attempts each, in which seven goals were scored by each team while they both wasted four kicks each to level the scores. Sudden death then came into play.

Southern United Veteran Football Association player N. Lokendro Singh’s kick was saved by the Sporting Association goalkeeper while L. Ibobi Singh was bang on target, taking United Veteran Sporting Association into the semi-final.

Th. Krishna Singh of United Veteran was declared the Man of the Match.
